When avoiding stimuli, individuals with autism often experience the need for an environment with fewer sensory stimuli. Sensitivity to sound, light, or other stimuli can lead to stress and overwhelm. Avoiding busy places or situations with a lot of stimuli is often used as a strategy to prevent overstimulation.

In seeking stimuli, individuals with autism often experience a profound need for sensory stimulation. This quest can manifest in intense interests and activities, where sensory stimuli such as visual patterns, sounds, or textures take center stage. It can be a way to reduce overwhelm or, conversely, to experience a sense of control.
For some, this means engaging in repeated movements or immersing intensely in specific hobbies. Understanding this need for stimuli and providing positive, safe ways to address it contributes to the well-being of people with autism.

During sleep, people with autism often experience unique challenges. Sensory sensitivities, such as hypersensitivity to light or sound, can make falling asleep difficult. Changes in sleep routines can cause stress, as individuals with autism often benefit from consistency and predictability. It may also occur that they struggle to quiet their thoughts, impacting the ability to fall asleep.

People with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) often experience intense focus on specific topics or tasks. This deep focus can be a strength, but it can also lead to difficulty switching between tasks. External stimuli, such as noise or changes in the environment, can disrupt concentration.
A structured and quiet environment, free from distractions, contributes to optimal concentration. Understanding this need for focus and providing support for managing external stimuli are essential for promoting productive concentration in people with ASD.

People with autism can have various experiences during meals. Sensory sensitivities, such as textures and flavors, can play a role, influencing certain food preferences. Routine and predictability are often important, and changes in eating patterns can cause stress.
Social aspects of meals, such as interaction and eye contact, can be challenging. Understanding individual needs, creating a calm dining environment, and respecting personal preferences contribute to a positive dining experience for people with autism.

When learning, individuals with autism often experience unique challenges and strengths. They can develop deep interest and expertise in specific fields but may also struggle with social interactions and changes in teaching methods. Structure, visual support, and clear instructions are often crucial for an effective learning experience.
Sensitivity to stimuli and a need for predictability can influence the learning environment. Recognizing individual learning styles and offering adjustments, such as customized learning materials, contribute to an inclusive and supportive learning environment for people with autism.

When planning, individuals with autism often experience a need for structure and predictability. The planning process can be more complex due to sensitivity to change and a preference for routine. They often thrive with clear steps and an organized plan, wherein unexpected changes can cause stress.
Understanding and respecting this need for order in planning is crucial to provide a supportive environment, allowing individuals with autism to plan and execute their daily activities successfully and with less stress.

People with autism experience play in an individual and diverse manner. Sensory sensitivities can influence their preferences for certain activities, while structure and routine can shape the play experience. Some have deep interests and focus intensely on specific games, while others may encounter social challenges during group activities.
It is important to show understanding for this variability and to create an inclusive environment that takes into account the unique needs of each individual, making play an enjoyable and stimulating experience.

When traveling, individuals with autism experience various challenges and needs. Changes in environment and routine can cause stress. Sensory stimuli in airports or public transportation, such as sounds and crowds, can be overwhelming.
Clear communication and predictable travel schedules are crucial. Some benefit from visual support, such as maps or pictograms, to understand the journey. Creating a structured and calm travel environment, along with empathetic support, promotes a positive travel experience for people with autism.

Waiting can be a challenge for people with autism, often due to the need for structure and difficulty with unpredictability. The concept of time and uncertainty about how long the wait will last can cause stress. Sensory stimuli in waiting areas, such as sounds or lighting, can also be overwhelming.
Providing clear information about the waiting time, creating a calm environment, and offering distractions or tools to bridge the waiting time contribute to a more comfortable waiting experience for people with autism.
